On tonight's show, Doctor Fitness and the Fat Guy get the skinny about eating healthy from our "Blogger of the Week" Dr Tanya Taylor. Tanya is the editor of www.IAteAPie.Net a great blog that reviews foods that dieters like to eat. Tanya has her PhD in Food Science and Nutrition and she loves to talk food. She has some strong opinions about everything from articificial sweetners like Splenda to the government regulating trans fats. We also spoke with Sheri Gilburth. Sheri is a certified massage therapist and she spoke extensively about Reiki, an ancient healing technique that compliments massage therapy as well as other massage techniques. She told us stories about how she has been able to help her clients deal with stress, depression and maximize their athletic potential. You can learn more about her practice at www.heartcenteredtherapy.com Dr. Fitness seemed to have read the news this week and he had some thoughts about mindless eating from a study by Cornell University and he was freaking out about the increase of obesity related surgeries that are happening. The Fat Guy thinks obesity surgeries are good for everyone but Dr Fitness has a problem with people taking the easy way out. This week the good Doctor was kind enough to come up with a few tips. The tips segment is now called Dr Fitness' "Things You Can Do Today" to squeeze in activity into your busy schedule. Here are a few of Dr. Fitness' tips...Number 1, always take the stairs. Number 2, set your watch to beep every hour...then get up and do some light exercises for 5 minutes. Do things like jog in place or squats. If you do this 6-8 times a day you have done a nice easy workout. And Number 3, always park far away, the walk will do you good. Remember exercise has a cumulative effect every little bit helps. The doctor also mentioned (again) that he has been chosen to be an expert on the Fit America contest. On tonight's show, Doctor Fitness and the Fat Guy get the skinny about the only weight loss board game from Vicki Sorenson creator of The Fitness Challenge. We also spoke with Fran Powell with the Painmaster Patch who shared how his product can help treat a wide range of injuries and painful conditions. Then we spoke with Michelle Ufer-Herold the Spa Director at Chateau Elan, Atlanta's best kept spa and resort secret. Everyone knows that losing weight is difficult because it is so tough to stick with your exercise program for any length of time. That's where The Fitness Challenge comes in. This game is for any age or fitness level. Players compete against each other during their 8 week game. Exercise 3 times in a week and you get a bunch of stars. The player with the most stars wins a prize. And this is where the fun comes in, the loser has to pay up. That could mean washing the winner's car, cleaning their house or babysitting their kid. This game is a great way to keep compliant. Dr Fitness and the Fat Guy are about to go head to head and give it a try. When Dr Fitness took his girlfriend to the Chateau Elan for a romantic getaway he was blown away by the great food, the relaxing atmosphere and the superb service. He and his girlfriend left relaxed, recharged and refreshed. Michelle Ufer-Herold, the Spa Director shared some of the services and events that the doctor missed. For instance, each year you can stomp the grapes at the award winning vineyard that is on site. They also have a heated indoor pool, golf, tennis and horses for your pleasure. As you know Dr Fitness is a chiropractor and he helps people deal with pain on a regular basis. He came across the Painmaster patch and he can't stop talking about it. This small portable device uses micro current therapy which uses small pulsating currents of electricity that cannot be felt on the afflicted area in order to alleviate the pain. You just slap a couple of these patches on the area that hurts and forgot about it for a few hours. Then low and behold you will be amazed at the improvement in the pain. It is common for patients to have pain at an 8 level when they go to sleep then wake up and the pain is down to a 3 or 4 level when they use the patches. We also spoke with Juliet Zuercher Director of Nutritional Services at the Remuda Ranch. The Remuda Ranch is one of the top treatment centers for women suffering from eating disorders such as anorexia nervosa or bulimia. When it comes to emotional eating and the other pyschological issues involved in weight management there are not many more people as qualified as Linda Spangle. Jorge Cruise calls her a "true genius" and "an expert in emotional eating." Linda shared some of her best weight loss tips such as when you have a craving for crunchy or chewy foods ask yourself what's bothering you? Is it stress? Family issues? Money? Will eating those chips make those real problems go away? You'll learn a bunch more during her interivew. Check it out! Juliet Zuercher joined us and shared some important information regarding eating disorders in women. She gave some great tips on what to do to prevent your daughter from getting an eating disorder such as not freaking out if she is a picky eater. Kids are great at regulating their nutrition instinctively. You'll be surprised to know that a lot of times your kid will pick the healthy choice on her own. Their unique program has helped many women. Dr. Fitness also chimed in with his tips about the things your gym won't tell you. Here are a few of Dr. Fitness' tips...Number 1, that the drop out rate of members who actually use the gym is astronomical. About 75% of members stop going to the gym in 90 days. Number 2, gyms are a cesspool. There are germs everywhere...on the machines, the swiss balls, the mats, the cardio equipment. Be sure to wipe down everything you touch. And Number 3, try not to have a heart attack at the gym...most are not equipped to handle any kind of medical emergency. Dr. Melina took time out from promoting her brand new book "The No Time To Lose Diet" to share some of her top weight loss tips. Be sure to check her out this Friday, January 12 on the Regis and Kelly show. She is also a regular contributor to www.vivmag.com, the first digital only, interactive women's lifestyle magazine. Dr. Melina is one of only 200 physician nutrition specialist, so she knows what she talking about when it comes to losing weight. She said her said her top tip for our listeners who want to lose weight would be to never have an all or nothing mentality when it comes to your diet. Avoid super restrictive diets that require you to radically change how you normally eat. She said that just sets you up to fail. We also had on Dr. Varada who passionately spoke about the importance of quitting smoking. Dr. Varada has seen first hand the damaging effects from smoking during her decades working as a pulmonologist. She was the first pediatric pulmonologist in Atlanta in 1981. Now she runs the Smoking and Tobacco Addiction Relief Center in Atlanta. She uses a low level laser therapy to help people quit smoking. On tonight's show, Doctor Fitness and the Fat Guy get the skinny about how to survive Halloween without putting on too many extra pounds. This is Dr. Fitness and the Fat Guy's 2nd Annual Halloween Calorie Saving Tip Show. Last year we were lucky enough to have Lisa Lillien, the Hungry-Girl on our first Halloween Show and she is back again this year. This year we also pulled some strings and had on Lyssie and Tammy Lakatos, the Nutrition Twins. And for the first time we had on one of New york's best personal trainers, who was recently featured in Oprah's O Magazine, Michael Gonzalez-Wallace. We started off with Michael telling us about "The Workout That Does It All" this workout strengthens your mind as well as your muscles. It boosts your immune system while burning calorie after calorie. Micheal is a former professional basketball player from Spain who is now taking over New York City with this awesome exercise program. You can also learn all about the Neuromuscular Strength Training system he specifically developed to help his clients on the upper East Side of Manhattan. His Upper East Side Workout video was filmed in Central Park so you won't find a more picturesque looking exercise dvd. Micheal lost 9 pounds during the filming of these videos so imagine how much weight you'll lose if you use them a couple times a week. They recently were kind of regulars on the Queer Eye for the Straight Guy TV show. And that's what we talked about tonight on our show. The Nutrition Twins are big fans of Tootsie pops and other lollipops for treats.
